The Indian economy is the eleventh largest in the world by nominal GDP and the fourth largest by purchasing power parity (PPP).

India  is poised to achieve 9 per cent economic growth in the current financial year itself, driven by robust performance by the agriculture and industry sectors.
The economy grew by 8.9 per cent in the second quarter of the current fiscal.

India has emerged as one of the world's top ten countries in industrial production. The nation's industrial production grew at the fastest pace in three months at 10.8 per cent.
Manufacturing grew 11.3 percent in October after a 4.6 percent gain in September.

India is one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world, expanding at 35 per cent on average in the first four months of the current financial year.

Around 3.69 lakh (369,000) foreign tourists came to India in September this year as compared to 3.28 lakh (328,000) during the same month in 2009.

Inspiring to see India moving ahead in all spheres. But, if we consider Human Resource Development, we still lag behind. Based on HDI index released by UN, India ranks 134 out of 145 countries. So, our rate of growth can be pushed ahead, if our human resource is properly utilized.

The country, with 133 points, ranks next to United Arab Emirates [ Images ] (134 points) on the global trade confidence level index, according to the survey conducted by Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).
Vietnam, with 132 points and Brazil [ Images ] with 129, are third and fourth respectively. France [ Images ], with 95 points, was 17th and last in the index, with a very low confidence level, HSBC India [ Images ] trade and supply chain head Bhriguraj Singh said in New Delhi [ Images ] on Tuesday.
He said the survey had found that some markets, including Asia Pacific region, Latin America, Canada [ Images ] and Europe were in positive territory after the financial crisis.
A total of 5,120 small and medium exporters globally were respondents for the findings and were asked for their outlook for the next six months, he said.
He said emerging economies topped the index with 122 points against 106 points for developed markets.
Stating that the confidence level among Indian exporters remained upbeat, he said trade confidence in India grew to 133 points from 117 in the second half of 2009, which reeled under the impact of the global financial crisis.
Giving statistics, he said exports were around $12.4 billion in January 2009, but rose to $14.3 billion in January 2010.
Similarly, exports in February 2010 also increased to $16.1 billion from $11.09 billion in February 2009.
Exports in 2008-09 stood at $162 billion and marginally increased to $164 billion in 2009-10, he said.
He said the survey had found that 60 per cent of Indian exporters expect finance from banks to increase in the next six months, while 59 per cent are confident of having access to finance through banks.

A 14-year-old girl of Indian-origin has been crowned as Australia's brainiest student in a battle of neuroscience knowledge in Sydney.
Uma Jha, from Perth's Shenton College, in inner-west Shenton Park, outsmarted more than 4000 competitors from across Australia to bag the title.
The 2010 Australian Brain Bee Challenge is designed to test high school students on a range of topics, including intelligence, memory, emotions, sleep, Alzheimer's disease and stroke.
Uma has to compete against other state winners in the national final of the competition, which included a brain-teasing anatomy exam, doctor-patient diagnosis and a neuroscience quiz.
"The competition was tied right up until the end and it was a really nerve-wracking finish," News.com.au quoted Uma as saying after the event.
"I've never won a national science competition before, so it's amazing," she added.
However the hard work does not stop here for Uma. She will now travel to California for the International Brain Bee Challenge in August. (ANI)

Amazing at 5: Five-year-old Varsha Vinod, considered to be the world’s youngest black belt.

LONDON: Five-year-old Indian girl Varsha Vinod, considered the world’s youngest black belt holder, surprised a British karate champion with her skills in a mock-fight.


Juan Moreno, who is expected to represent Britain in the European Championships next year, said he was shocked at how good she was.


Moreno, 31 years her senior, said, “She is the ultimate karate kid. It’s hard to remember that she is just five, her skills and concentration are amazing.Varsha, a student at the Academy of Martial Arts at Alappuzha, Kerala, trains for two-and-half hours each day, The Times reported on Saturday. — PTI
